What you need to know about El Junco

  • The only permanent freshwater lake in the entire Galapagos archipelago, located in a volcanic crater at an altitude of approximately 700 m in the San Cristobal mountain range.

  • Formed by the collapse of a volcanic cone thousands of years ago, the lake reaches 4–6 meters deep, with a diameter of ~270–300 m.

  • The name comes from an endemic reed plant (Cyperus anderssonii) that grows on its edge..

  • It was crucial during World War II as a source of water for the US military base in Baltra.

  • Ideal for taking a ~2km walk through its green surroundings, and observing birds such as frigate birds, pintail ducks, gallinules, St. Kitts’ mockingbirds and Darwin’s finches.
