What you need to know about the Sierra Negra Volcano

  • Active shield volcano, located at the southern tip of Isabela Island, with an altitude of 1124m and forming part of the six volcanoes on the island

  • It has the largest caldera in the Galapagos (about 7x9km and about 100m deep), making it the deepest in the archipelago and the second deepest in the world.

  • It has frequent eruptions, with the most recent ones in 2005 and June 2018, still visible in young lava fields and coastal fumaroles.
