Active shield volcano, located at the southern tip of Isabela Island, with an altitude of 1124m and forming part of the six volcanoes on the island
It has the largest caldera in the Galapagos (about 7x9km and about 100m deep), making it the deepest in the archipelago and the second deepest in the world.
It has frequent eruptions, with the most recent ones in 2005 and June 2018, still visible in young lava fields and coastal fumaroles.
The tour complements the visit with the summit of Volcano Chico, visible from the edge of the caldera.

Its caldera is the largest shield volcano in the world and reveals patterns of lava flows from 2018 that cover the crater floor.
The recent lava terrain allows us to observe active sulfur fumaroles, areas with palpable geothermal heat near the “Sulfur Mine Field”
From the top of Chico you get panoramic views of Isabela, Fernandina and Santiago, with the mountain sky at your feet.
Sierra Negra is one of the few areas in the Galapagos where you can learn about volcanology firsthand: volcanic materials and formations are within easy reach.

We recommend booking at least two weeks in advance, especially during peak season (June-August and December-January), although we also assist with last-minute reservations subject to availability.
